195mm gas strut weight capacity

The 195mm gas strut comes in a range of weight capacities measured in newton force (n), including 100n, 200n, 300n and 400n. The weight capacity of the gas strut is related to this newton force: use the standard calculation of 10kg per 100n. So for a 400mm x 300n gas strut, the weight capacity is 30kg, whilst for a 195mm x 400n gas strut, it’s 40kg. This is why it’s essential you know the weight of the item that needs to be opened and closed. Make sure you don’t purchase a strut that doesn’t suit your needs.

An important point to note is that these calculations only give you the strut’s potential weight capacity under the best of circumstances. This changes as the weight that needs to be lifted moves closer to the hinges. The closer the weight the harder the stut needs to work to make the lift. Selecting the right gas strut

If you purchase a 195mm gas strut, it means that the full extension length of the strut is 195mm. Is that long enough? Your gas strut should be approximately 60% of the height of the door or window in question in length. This means that this particular gas strut is suitable for lifting doors or windows of length approximately 325mm (195mm is 60% of 325mm). Next we’ll outline how to determine the newton force required.

Replacing old gas struts

Gas struts come with a label that contains all the information and specifications needed to replace the existing strut. If you do not have the label or cannot read it, you need to measure the diameter of the shaft and cylinder. That way you can estimate the newton force required.

A good way of estimating the newton force is by using a broomstick with a set of bathroom scales (remember each 10kg equals 100n). With all of these measurements, you can usually select the right 195mm gas struts with the correct newton force to replace your existing strut. This is also a good method to use if you have increased the weight of the window or door for some reason and you need to work out what the new newton force required is.

If we have calculated that we need a 195mm gas strut and the weight of the canopy window that we need to lift is 30kg, then we need a 195mm gas strut with 300n. Make sure to check that the width of the shaft and cylinder of the replacement match the old strut as well.

Installing the gas struts 

Selecting the right gas stratus for new installations is a little more complex than replacing old ones. There’s actually a formula you need to use, which can appear a bit overwhelming, but if you have your measurements, you will be fine. Our team is happy to work this out for you if you give us your measurements, but we’ve included the formula here if you want to have a go yourself.

The measurements you need are as follows:

G = the weight of the item to be lifted (door or window)

H = 60% of the length of this item

L = mounting distance of the hinge

Have you got these numbers? Once used in the formula you’ll have the newton force required. Simply measure 60% of the length of the door or window to get the size of the strut needed, and use the newton formula to work out how much newton force is required. With our example, if the newton force from this formula equals 300n and the length of the door is 320mm, then 60% of the window length is 192mm and so we need a 195mm gas strut with 300n.
