What’s the weight capacity of the 316mm gas strut?
Gas strut weight capacity is measured by units of newton force (n). Our range of 430mm gas struts come in 100n, 200n, 300n, and 400n capacities. The weight capacity of the gas strut is related to this newton force, using the calculation of 10kg for every 100n.
A 400mm strut with a 300n rating has a weight capacity of 30kg. A 316kg x 100n gas strut has a capacity of 10kg. It’s essential you know the weight of the item that’s being opened and closed to find the right weight capacity for your gas strut.

How to select the right gas struts?
If you purchase a 316mm strut, it means that the full extension length of the gas strut is 216mm. The length needs to be about 60% of the height of the door or window that’s being opened and closed. This means that this particular gas strut is suitable for lifting doors or windows of length approximately 526mm (e.g. 316mm is 60% of 526mm). This calculation gives you the length; we’ll now go into how to work out the required newton force.
Replacing existing gas struts
If you are replacing an old gas strut because it’s no longer functioning properly, there’s often a label with all the information you need. If you don’t have access to this information, measure the diameter of the shaft and the cylinder. You then need to estimate the newton force needed. A handy way of doing this is by using a broomstick and bathroom scales. Keep in mind that 10kg equals 100n.
Once you have all these measurements, select the 316mm gas strut with the right newton force. Remember to bear in mind any custom weight increases to windows or doors when working out how much force you need. To break it down for you, if you’re purchasing a 316mm strut and the window or door or lid that is being lifted weighs 20kg, you need the 316mm x 200n gas strut.
Don’t forget to check the width of the shaft and cylinder of the replacement strut as well to make sure it matches.
Initial gas strut installations
Installing gas struts for the first time is a bit more complex. The formula for working out what you need is not as daunting as it might first appear. Just work out one measurement at a time and you’ll find it easy. If you would like help, we’re happy to lend you a hand.
The measurements required include:
G = the weight of the item to be lifted (door, lid or window)
H = 60% of the length of this item
L = mounting distance of the hinge
Using these numbers you can work out the newton force needed. Work out 60% of the length of the door or window to find the size of the strut: if the door is 515mm then 60% of that length is 309mm, so a 316mm strut will suffice. Once you know that the newton force is 300n then you know you need a 316mm x 300n strut.
