Everything you need to know about heavy duty drawer slides
The Dunn and Watson heavy duty 227kg Titan Series slides are ideal for tradies, campers and 4WD enthusiasts who need to stow heavy gear in their drawer systems, but also need a safety locking feature. These drawers keep all your gear stowed away safely, so you can keep order in the back of your Ute, 4WD or truck and find whatever you need, when you need it.
What sizes are available?
These heavy duty slides are available in a large variety of lengths from 356mm right up to 1524mm, so you won’t have any trouble finding the right slide for the job. The closed length of these slides is also the same length as they extend. So if the closed length of your slider is 1524mm, it will extend a further 1524mm when fully extended in the open position. The trigger lever (mentioned below) sits at the end of the slide, so you always need to allow a further 25mm when you are measuring the space for your drawer systems.
Why are they called locking drawer slides?
The reason they are called locking slides is due to the trigger lever you can see on the ends of the slides. When these are closed, the slides will not operate and the draw will not open. To unlock the drawers, you simply press down on the trigger lever and the slide will open to its full extension. When you have finished with the drawer, you just press down on the trigger lever again, and the drawer slides shut and locks into place.
This is a huge safety feature, because the drawers won’t suddenly slide open and injure someone standing in front of the drawers. They also won’t slide open accidentally if you are parked on a slope or uneven ground. These slides will lock when they are fully closed and fully extended, so make sure that you always close or open them completely, waiting for the tell-tale noise of them locking in place. Otherwise, they could injure someone if they accidentally slide open. These heavy duty slides are ideal for accessing fridges and BBQs when you are on the road.
Can you disconnect these heavy duty drawer slides?
No, you cannot disconnect these heavy duty sliders, simply because they carry too much weight and it would be too dangerous to allow them to disconnect. This isn’t true of our small and medium sliders however, which can be disconnected. All sliders must be mounted vertically, because if you lay them flat, they won’t carry any weight.
What if I need locking slides with more weight tolerance?
If you need slides with a higher weight rating, then you can double up the runners. This is achieved by installing one slide horizontally above the other. This doesn’t mean however, that you will get 227kg from the first pair of slides and 227kg from the second pair of slides! The rule of thumb is that you will gain an extra 75% of the weight rating from the second pair of slides, so always take that into account when you need a higher weight rating. However, at Trailer Parts Direct, we always have one eye on safety, so we suggest that you install more drawers to take the weight, rather than a double slide system.
Can they be installed in any drawer systems?
Yes, as long as you select the correct size drawer slides, they can be retrofitted to any drawer systems. We have installed them in aluminium drawer systems, checker plate drawer systems and carpet lined drawer systems.
How do I know what size slides I need?
At the bottom of this page you will see a chart that helps you to decide what size slides you need for the job. Essentially, you’ll select your slides based on the weight you need to carry in the drawer. So if the drawer only needs to store items that weigh 20kg for example, then you need a pair of slides 300mm to 400mm in length (these are our small sliders). Our 227kg Titan Series drawer slides, however, are heavy duty, but always remember that the longer the length you require, the less weight they can safely carry.
The weight rating of these heavy duty slides is calculated on a 500mm square drawer. So if your draws are a different size, it pays to give us a call, give us the dimensions of your drawers and we can advise you on the right size slides for your system (they are sold in pairs).
Do I really need heavy duty drawer slides?
If you have installed hardware store bought kitchen drawer runners in your 4WD, Ute or truck, they won’t last you five minutes off road! That’s because inferior drawer slides take a beating when you are out in the bush and they just can’t take the heat!
